So today I get a text from my most favorite sister missionaries asking me if I could help teach English to Spanish speakers. My first thought: what the! I don't know any freaking Spanish. And trust me that statement is sooo true, although turns out I know a little more than I thought. So I immediately wanted to turn them down and be like you are on drugs there is no way I can teach someone English!
But I decided to go anyways, and turns out there were about 3 other girls there who like myself know very little Spanish, so I didn't feel as inadequate as I originally did. So we are sitting in a room and the Spanish speaking elders are telling us a little about some of the people that are coming and what their story is type of thing... This is making me sooo nervous! I am only 18 years old! There is no way I am knowledgeable enough to teach someone English! But they assure us that it will be fine and as long as we just keep conversing with them in English then everything will go smoothly and they won't be too confused and they will talk back to us. It was sooo true!
I got paired up with a girl named Damaris (spell check on that one) but she was also 18! Her English wasn't very good at all, but we didn't have very much trouble talking to each other! We did this worksheet together about clothing and what the people were wearing, it covered things like shirt, pants, jeans, jacket, hat, shoes, etc. And she knew for the most part what each one was! I just helped her with her spelling a little, but I asked her to tell me what each one was in Spanish. I took three years of Spanish and I had no idea what these things were! I was a little ashamed with myself, but once she told me it all immediately clicked back! We both learned alot! I am seriously soooo happy I went! I had so much fun! Plus I helped a sweet girl make a little bit of progress in learning English!
So I definitely encourage everyone to try new things, and even if you don't think you will be good at something to try anyways! Especially when you could help other people, just by going there and talking to this sweet girl, I helped her practice English! YAYYY!!!
I'm going next time!! (:
